In March 2010 the Irish Medicines Board announced an official recall of all silicone breast implants manufactured by a French company named Poly Implant Prothese (PIP). It transpired that these implants have a higher than average risk of rupturing due to a defective outer shell and hence the reason for their recall. Research has shown that PIP have been using an unauthorised silicone rather than a medically approved silicone. This industrial grade silicone has potentially harmful effects on human health. It has come to light that approximately 1500 Irish women have been affected by this recall. The breast implants were implanted in the following Private Hospitals / Clinics Shandon Street Hospital in Cork, Clane Hospital in Co Kildare, The Harley Medical Clinic in Dublin, The Hospital Group (Dublin and Galway) and were not used in Public Hospitals.
